Stretch Therapy
Description
Stretch Therapy utilizes active isolated stretching (AIS) as a method of lengthening the muscle and releasing fascial tissue. AIS allows the body to repair itself and to prepare for daily activities. In this method the stretch is held for a duration of 2 seconds, this allows the targeted muscle to lengthen without triggering the protective stretch reflex of the antagonistic muscle contraction. As stated in the name these stretches are active, meaning a trained therapist moves the patients body part during the stretch, this active movement allows optimal flexibility to be achieved. A stretch rope or band is usually incorporated into these movements as an aid in reaching full range of motion during this active stretching technique.
